RØDE Launches New Audio Interface That Puts A Recording Studio In Your Pocket – Forbes

The tiny little AI-Micro from RØDE weighs just 20g and can connect two 3.5mm microphones that … [+] connects to computers, phones and tablets.
Once upon a time, to record sound you had to be in a studio. Way back at the dawn of recorded music, when everything was mechanical, it took large a lot of effort to capture recorded sound of choirs and orchestras. Even in the age of electric recording systems, there was a need for large reel-to-reel tape recorders and lots of other equipment.
Fortunately, times have changed. We can now capture superb sound quality on smartphones and pocket digital recorders. We can capture sound almost anywhere in high-resolution that exceeds CD-quality.
One brand that’s leading the development in portable sound capture is the Australian company RØDE. The Sydney-based company dominates the market for video microphones and loads of other audio gear for use in the great outdoors. RØDE has just announced the release of the AI-Micro, an ultra-compact dual-channel interface that records high-quality audio to any mobile device or computer.
The RØDE AI-Micro comes with three cables that connect directly to iOS, Android and USB-A ports with … [+] hi-res audio.
The new AI-Micro has two microphone inputs backed up with high-quality preamps and can record in high-resolution, up to 24-bit/48kHz audio, enabling creatives to capture sound on almost any device. The inputs of the AI-Micro are auto-sensing so they can instantly detect whether a mic has a TRS or TRRS jack plugs and then automatically adapts the input without any need for adaptors.
The first input can also be configured as a single stereo TRS input so that virtually any microphone with a 3.5mm output can be connected to the AI-Micro, including RØDE’s VideoMics, lavaliers, plus wireless systems like the RØDE Wireless GO. It even works with stereo microphones like the Stereo VideoMic Pro. The AI-Micro also includes a high-power headphone jack that can deliver clear and zero-latency audio monitoring and playback.
Weighing less than 20 grams, the AI-Micro is superbly compact and an ideal pocket recording studio that can be taken anywhere. Designed primarily to connect to smartphones, tablets and computers, via its USB output, the AI-Micro is plug-and-play compatible with macOS, Windows, iOS and Android devices. It’s also supplied with high-quality USB-A, USB-C and Lightning cables, making it quick and easy to set up.
The RØDEAI-Micro can record a podcast, voiceover or almost any audio content to a smartphone using … [+] up to two microphones.
The AI-Micro is compatible with RØDE Connect, RØDE’s free podcasting and streaming software for Mac and Windows. This enables up to four microphones to be connected to a computer with level controls, solo and mute buttons, plus studio-quality audio processing at the click of a button. The processing effects include a, noise gate, the legendary APHEX Aural Exciter, plus Big Bottom effects. Using the AI-Micro with RØDE Connect enables anyone to record a professional-sounding podcast or livestreams with a basic 3.5mm microphone.
The inputs on the AI Micro from RØDE can auto sense between TRS and TRRS jack plugs.
RØDE Central is another app from the Australian company. It enables users to configure the AI-Micro on a computer or mobile device, including adjusting the input gain and headphone output level, as well as switching between ‘Merged’, ‘Split’ and ‘Stereo’ channel modes, plus switching on the high-pass filter. The RØDE Reporter mobile app is another piece of software that can configure the AI-Micro for broadcast-quality recording in the field by reporters and multi-media journalists.
This new interface is the latest product from RØDE aimed at helping creators and audio professionals to capture audio anywhere. It has some truly powerful features in such a light and ultra-compact package that’s easy to use. It sounds as if it could be the perfect pocket recording studio.
Pricing & Availability: The AI-Micro is available now and costs $79.
