For the last two decades Shinedoe has been doing exactly what her name symbolises.
Through her various endeavours the Amsterdam-born and raised artist has been on a mission to move people through music, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually too.
Since starting DJing at the age of 19 she’s been driven by the deep and soulful sounds of Detroit and Chicago, and pioneering artists like Jeff Mills, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson.
She took matters into her own hands by starting her Inmotion parties back in 2001 and refined her skills as a DJ in the process. The party was renamed to Intacto a few years later, coinciding with the launch of her co-run label of the same name which served as a platform for much of her own releases including three of her long players. Other labels came knocking too; the likes of Rekids, Axis and Cocoon also housed her characteristically powerful grooves, and later down the line, a new platform of her own: Music That Moves.
The label, launched in 2018, perfectly sums up her outlook as a whole. A place for her own productions, she’s been able to immortalise her long-term musical vision which seeks to show the sensual, soulful side of techno – the latest example being her Freedom Riders LP which came out in October.
Her mix for us showcases exactly that. Percussive and pacy, it’s a collection of shimmering techno, electro and breaks (inclusive of her own productions) that’s fluid and effortless from the get-go.
Please introduce yourself… Who are you, where are you and what are you?
Here is a short introduction: my artist name is Shinedoe, and I was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I have been active as a DJ since the age of nineteen, and I’m also a producer and label owner in electronic music. I used to run Intacto Records as a co-owner, and in 2018 I started a new label called MTM Records, Music That Moves. I love to touch people’s souls when I produce and play music which resonates with me.
What does your music sound like?
That’s a difficult question to put in words, but here is an image.
Where was the mix recorded?
It was recorded at my home.
What would be the ideal setting to listen to the mix?
You can listen to the mix any moment: during sport, cooking, driving or at a party.
What should we be wearing?
Everything that makes you feel comfortable to move in.
What would be your dream setting to record a mix: Location/system/format?
Recording a mix at home is different compared to playing at a club. The format is not important to me, the music is. For me, it’s essential that all the technical equipment is available and that it works.
Which track in the mix is your current favourite?
I love all the tracks; each track has its unique vibe.
What is your favourite recorded mix of all time?
It’s hard to say as each mix was mixed in a certain period. I do not listen to my mixes in that way.
If you could go back to back with any DJ from throughout history, who would it be and why?
I would love to do back-to-back with Jeff Mills, Robert Hood, Rolando or Freddy K because playing with them would feel natural, and they know how to create a beautiful flow in their sets.
In 2020, Jeff Mills invited me to play at his `Directors Cut’ night at Shelter, Amsterdam. We kind of did back-to-back in a sense, switching every hour and playing together until the end. For me, it was a legendary night. I could not stop smiling.
What was your first DJ set up at home and what is it now?
Then it was a cheap Numark mixer and Technics 1200 MK turntables.
Now, it’s Technics 1200 MK turntables, Pioneer CDJ 2000, and a Pioneer mixer.
What is more important, the track you start on or the track you end on?
The track I start with sets for me the tone and direction I want to go.
What were the first and last records you bought?
The first record was the Night Tripper from Orlando Voorn. The last one was a repress of Drexciya’s ‘Digital Tsunami’ on Tresor Records.
If this mix was an edible thing, what would it taste like?
A warm chocolate brownie melting in your mouth.
If it was an animal, what would it be?
A leopard.
One record in your collection that is impossible to mix into anything?
I’ll make it work!
Upcoming in the world of Shinedoe… anything else we need to discuss?
My new album ‘Freedom Riders’ and my ‘Wake Up’ EP are now available on my MTM Records imprint. For more info, you can check out my website or follow me on IG.
